The Bologna Declaration signed in 1999 emphasizes the importance of improving the students’ mobility as one of the main goals contributing to the better quality of higher education. This implies that students should spend a part of their higher education at a university abroad. Students’ mobility can also be attained through student exchange programs, which means that a number of students from Serbia should attend a university abroad, while, at the same time, students from that foreign university should attend a university in Serbia.
Within the Academic Counseling Program, BOS has initiated a student exchange program called Undergraduate Exchange Program. The program has been active from 2004 to 2011.
The purpose of the program was to provide scholars with the experience of studying in a different academic environment, as well as of participating in extracurricular activities, in order to contribute to the advancement of higher education and civil society upon their return to Serbia. Participation in activities related to civil society took place through the community service.
The program enabled the creation of lasting ties among participants, thereby contributing to mutual understanding and tolerance among different cultures.
This program assumed that scholars had attended a university in the United States during one academic year. During their stay in the United States, grantees were required to complete 25 hours of volunteer work in the field of their interest. Upon completion of the academic year, scholarship recipients were required to return to Serbia to continue their undergraduate studies.
