How to finance your start-up: Financial modeling course for the XXVII Generation

17. May 2020.
Given the fact that my that consisted of students from the Faculty of Political Sciences and the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering, our finance knowledge was rather limited. However, the mentors from NPV coaches gave us great support through their directives and guidelines. Our five-member time distributed tasks efficiently while we did catch-ups and clarifications on joint meetings. We realized that the idea of the programme was not only to create a financial plan but to understand the whole concept of starting your business and find ways for improvement, cutting costs and more efficient use of resources. Besides, we improve our communication skills, work with great people, and gain knowledge we will most likely need ourselves in the future, as the financial part is essential for every venture. Our work with start-ups enabled us to learn and improve while bringing a new perspective to their businesses using the principles of coaching.

My team had a great fortune to work with Joan form a Ugandan start-up Uganics. She provided us with their financial plan which we immediately started analyzing and suggested improvements. Still, we got a complete picture during the first online meeting with Joan who explained to us that Uganics is producing different kinds of organic soap used against malaria-transmitting mosquitoes. They also employ difficulty employable women which strengthens local communities in Uganda. Researching the economic and political situation in Uganda, it is not difficult to see great positive influence Uganics has, both locally and globally. For example, the fact that in Uganda 16 people pass away daily as a consequence of malaria brings you a new perspective. This was an additional motive for my team and me to contribute as much as we can to Uganics. At that moment I realized the importance of "numbers" as an essential foundation for realization and implementation of great and inspirational ideas.
