How can career guidance and counseling contribute to the prevention of students drop-out from secondary schools?

02. Oct 2018.

On 27th and 28th of September 2018, Belgrade open school (BOS) organized a two-day accredited training: ''Career guidance and counselling as a mechanism for the prevention of students drop-out''. Twenty teachers and teachers’ associates from ten schools from all around Serbia participated in the training held in Hotel ''Prag''.

At the beginning of the training, Jelena Manic Radoicic, program manager of the Programme for Improvement of Employability, greeted the participants, and introduced them to the activities of Belgrade open school and BOS contribution in the area of career guidance and counselling. She also presented the model of career guidance and modern notion of career in an interactive way.

During two intensive and creative days, with our trainers: Bojana Jevtovic from the Divac foundation and Olja Jovanovic, from the Faculty of Philosophy – the University of Belgrade, participants had an opportunity to discuss and exchange their views and knowledge on the issue of students drop-out and the mechanism of prevention through career guidance and counselling. The first day of the training was especially oriented to the issue of risk of drop-out and work with students from the vulnerable groups, as well as on understanding and detection of signals and factors which lead to drop-out. During the second day, participants continued with the creative work, directly creating and planning of career guidance activities which will be specially oriented on prevention of students drop-out at the level of their schools.

At the end of the training, Bozidar Dimic, project coordinator within the BOS Programme of Improvement of employability, encouraged the participants to apply their new knowledge acquired during the training through the planning of their next steps.

The training was realized within the project ''Quality services for better youth employment - KviS on BIS'', with the financial support of Solidar Suisse - Office in Serbia. The training is accredited by the Institute for Advancing Education and Upbringing (ZUOV) and carries 16 points.
